Pilgrim Geese
Our first year here, I raised two goslings to have as guardians for our flock. They were supposed to be a Chinese and an African but one turned out to be a Pilgrim. I fell in love with him and after doing research to learn what breed he was, I knew I needed to breed them. Geese are a wonderful addition to the homestead with their gentle, graceful yet comical demeanors. Geese are intelligent creatures and form incredibly strong bonds from hatch, imprinting on their caretaker. They are observant and protective of their flock and are especially good at alerting the other birds to incoming predators. Ganders especially are instinctively territorial and protective especially during their mating season so be prepared that they may need extra space during this time. Pilgrims are a medium sized goose. They lay an average of 40-60 large white eggs a year and are excellent at raising their young. They are incredibly hardy creatures and have an average lifespan of 20+ years. They are an autosexing breed with the males being predominantly white with some grey under their wings and females being predominantly grey with white markings around their face. The breed is listed as threatened with The Livestock Conservancy.
